The Sandbox Notebook emblem The Sandbox Notebook Open-ended games, written down

Ordered by hours logged, because in a game without an ending that is the only figure that cannot be argued with.

Fourteen notebooks, longest first

Six entries are written up in full. The remaining eight are summarised here with their figures, and will be written out as the backlog clears.

A hand-built settlement on a terracotta plateau at golden hour with winding paths and terraced plots
01 · Colony sandbox

Plateau Holding

Ninety-six hours across four months. A water table, one badly-placed channel dug on the first afternoon, and a settlement that grew around the mistake instead of correcting it.

96 hrs Goal at 0:40 Supplied 38% · invented 62% Closed: satisfied
An impractically tall timber tower on a windswept moor at dusk with a lantern at the top
02 · Survival sandbox

Moor Tower

Seventy-one hours. Survival for the first thirty, then forty spent building a tower with no purpose at all, which is the point at which the notebook became interesting.

71 hrs Goal at 3:15 Supplied 44% · invented 56% Closed: patch broke it
A wooden contraption of beams and pulleys collapsing across a quarry gap with dust rising
03 · Physics sandbox

Quarry Gap

Fifty-two hours and the highest invented figure in the notebook at eighty-one per cent. Almost nothing we remember was authored by anybody but us, which cuts both ways.

52 hrs Goal at 0:12 Supplied 19% · invented 81% Closed: exhausted
A flooded field at dawn where a hand-dug channel has broken its bank
04 · Farming sandbox

Lowfield

Forty-four hours ended by an irreversible flood of our own making. The only permanent consequence in the notebook, and the entry defends it at length.

44 hrs Goal at 1:05 Supplied 51% · invented 49% Closed: consequence
A cramped modular space station interior built outward in an untidy spiral with rerouted pipes
05 · Station sandbox

Spiral Station

Thirty-eight hours in a station that grew outward in a spiral because demolishing anything felt like an admission. A game about the compound cost of never revising.

38 hrs Goal at 0:55 Supplied 46% · invented 54% Closed: bored
A hand-built log cabin beside an autumn birch forest with a crooked jetty on a still lake
06 · Wilderness sandbox

Birch Lake

Twenty-nine hours and the lowest invented figure here. A place so complete and so pleasant that it left us almost nothing to add, which turns out to be a problem.

29 hrs Goal at 2:40 Supplied 74% · invented 26% Closed: nothing left to want

Eight further notebooks, figures only

These are complete as records but not yet as entries. Their figures already feed both ledgers, so the counts on those pages include everything below.
